Rev. Sophia DeWitt was the guest preacher for Disability Empowerment Sunday. She wove together Jeremiah’s stories of the Israelites who were overtaken by the Babylonians and the lepers who were cured by Jesus to explore the different ways one might be exiled both physically and psychologically. Jeremiah challenged the Israelites to pray on behalf of their conquerors, even if the Babylonian’s were not repentant, and to contribute to the land. In the healing story, it is the Samaritan among the ten lepers who stops to be grateful, even though he would have been shunned both because of his ethnicity and his disease. Sophia then lifts up the ways that the issues for people with disabilities have been in some ways been addressed, but in other serious ways still persist even within the United Church of Christ.
