Get a fresh take on God, spirit, faith, life, love, justice, and community. First Church Berkeley is an open and affirming, progressive Christian church in Berkeley, California, part of the United Church of Christ. We are committed to Jesus’ countercultural and life-giving path. We understand the life of spirit to be a journey, not a destination. Our podcast features the powerful preaching of several of the ministers on staff and special guests. More about the church at firstchurchberkeley.org.
The earth is hardly built to human scale. Much of is habitable, but much isn’t, and even some of the places that are friendly on a day-to-day basis are plagued by occasional natural and man-made disasters. Though humankind was granted dominion according to the Genesis scripture, we may have overdone it and now we have climate change to cope with. Minister of Art & Communication Phil Porter suggests that some of the characteristics of progressive Christians have may prepare them for the difficult challenge of dealing with climate change—an understanding of the invisible, the long view, a commitment to world citizenship that enables collective action across national borders, and a language for speaking truth to rich and powerful rulers. And then he crowdsources ideas from the congregation (in one sentence!) about what we should do in our current political climate.
